Can Man Dan Champions Community Gardens
Can Man Dan, the Executive Director of the Can Man Dan Foundation, is once again on a mission to champion sustainable growth in Edmonton in response to rising food insecurity in Alberta's capital city. This initiative sprung to life after the City of Edmonton cancelled its City Farms Gardening Program due to financial hardship, leaving Edmonton's Food Bank urgently scrambling for donations and new avenues of sustainable growth.
To help Edmonton's Food Bank, Can Man Dan, along with countless volunteers, sprung into action by planting two new community gardens for families in need. One can be found in the middle of Fort Edmonton Park, with the second being hosted in the field of McCauley School.
"I am not sure what the City of Edmonton was thinking and it's a little frustrating, if I'm being honest," said Can Man Dan when being asked about the cancelled City Farms Gardening Program. "People are in need more than ever before, and nutritious food is quickly becoming a luxury item for a lot of families and individuals in need. So, for the City of Edmonton to cancel such an important program when our local food bank is seeing more demand than ever is a little frustrating and cold hearted."
Can Man Dan is also using this initiative as an opportunity to call upon everyday Edmontonian's to host/create their own community gardens in support of Edmonton's Food Bank. Edmonton's Food Bank, originally founded 1980, is currently serving an estimated 40,000 people each month, with funding and donations going out fast than they come in.
